Your Options at the Box Office This Weekend

While there are no stellar, hugely anticipated releases this weekend, there is a mix of the good and bad on offer if you want to catch a film this weekend. Here are some trailers, gist of movies on offer and their reviews to help you make up your minds. Check out your options for this weekend:

Naam Shabana

This movie is supposed to be a prequel or rather a spinoff of the 2015 Akshay Kumar movie Baby. Here we have a tough young woman as a special /secret agent of some sort getting stuck into some dangerous missions. Reviews of Naam Shabana starring Tapsee Pannu, Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher have been average; there is some good action but overall the film doesn’t offer anything very original or eventful.

Poorna

Directed by Rahul Bose, this is a biographical film about Malavath Poorna, the youngest girl to ever climb Mount Everest. Aditi Inamdar plays the title role of the 13 year old girl who climbed the highest mountain in the world. The film received good reviews and is described as simple, soulful and heartening; a female centric film set in rural India.

The Boss Baby

This one is about a secret service run by and for little babies. The ring leader baby is a kid with an attitude, rules with an iron fist, teaches other kids to hate puppies and thinks of ways to revolt and to avoid humiliation. Featuring the voices of Alec Baldwin, Jimmy Kimmel and Lisa Kudrow, the film has great animation. Reviews are mixed; the film is described as having some bursts of wit and humour, some visual inventiveness and seems to be failrly watchable overall.

Anaarkali of Aarah

You also have the option of watching this Swara Bhaskar starrer which released last week. The film is about the sort of exploitation and injustice women are made to live with; the sort of injustice that some women refuse to knuckle under. The film garnered overall good reviews as one more attempt to dispel misogyny and dismantle patriarchal precepts of society.

Phillauri

The trailer was extremely promising, but the Anushka Sharma and Daljit Dosanjh starrer film turned out to be rather less so. Featuring a ghost that one gets married to by mistake, the film goes back and forth in time. According to reviews, the film has a brilliant concept but the execution falls short. The film released last week, but is still a decent option for this weekend.
