Winter in Mumbai? Who Knew!

I lived in Mumbai for five years and never needed to use a jacket or shawl or any kind of warm covering during that time. Now however, the Mumbai friends on my Facebook timeline swear that they are experiencing winter in Mumbai currently. With over 1.8 crore Mumbaikars currently reeling under unusually low temperatures, they obviously had a lot to say on social media:

It can happen!

Mumbai can feel cold! A lot of people got very nostalgic; recalling times past when the mercury dipped that low.

Not used to winter

In North India, the use of thermal inners is common. In Mumbai, the closest anyone gets to using thermal inners is watching product ads on TV… ads that proclaim thandi mein garmi ka ehsas.

How cold is it?

It is just about pleasant, but Mumbai people will happily classify anything below 20 degrees as a ‘cold winter’.

13 degrees! OMG!

This is a chilly night in Mumbai!

Because

For the regular Mumbai-vasi, even a little bit is too much!

Tweeting screenshots

Many of the Mumbai tweeple are attaching screenshots with their tweets… as though no one is going to believe them otherwise! Not sure whether this is a complaint or a boast, though.

Delhi vs. Mumbai

Winters in Delhi can be quite brutal; in Mumbai, they are benign at best. That doesn’t stop Mumbaikars from breaking out the jackets, shawls and monkey caps – because hey! it’s cold on that early morning Virar local!

How’s the josh?

Mumbaikars may be complaining about the supposed cold but the fact is they are delighted to experience anything other than summer

Not for long!

Those who are reveling in the unusually cool weather of Mumbai are aware that this is just a short respite before the pitiless onslaught of summer.

Inevitable!

Where there is talk of winter, can a GoT reference be avoided? Apparently not.

Literally true!

The ice or ‘barf’ has indeed fallen! So it ‘snowed’ in the suburbs and Mumbai is shivering!

Mumbai this year

They thought that ‘winter’ was over. Apparently it wasn’t!

Their woolies

Mostly, the people in Mumbai get to use their woolies only when they go out of town. Sometimes they get to do this while still in Mumbai!

No complaints!

Most people who feel it’s too cold quickly remind themselves about the impending summers; and suddenly they develop a new appreciation for the so-called Mumbai winter.

People are confused!

It’s too cold not to take a blanket. But it is also too warm to snuggle under one! Oh, the indecision!

Lovin’ it!

Mumbai has three seasons: hot, very hot and wet. This weather is so out of the ordinary, that the folks in Mumbai are really enjoying the unseasonal absence of heat. Right now, everyone is making the best of it, because tomorrow… we sweat.
