How to Choose a Private College in India?

College is not just a place to pursue higher studies, but it is a place that will help a person grow, enhance their personality, provide them innumerable possibilities, give them opportunities to hone their skills and provide them quality education as well. It is also a place where a young person will make some of the best friends of their life and experience some of the most enjoyable memories of their life. So, obviously the college you choose (for yourself if you're a student or for your child if you're a concerned parent) is a decision of great consequence. Here are some aspects to look at while making the important decision of choosing a private college in India:

Private or Government?

Both have their advantages of course. Government-run institutions tend to be well established over several decades and have a proven track record; some of these have a great worldwide reputation. On the other hand, private institutions may be newer, however they are professionally run, with modern facilities and campuses, and have better infrastructure overall. There is also the fact that private, autonomous institutions do not have reservation quotas and admissions may be much easier.

Fee structure vis-à-vis facilities

While government institutions tend to have lower fees this should not automatically be a deciding factor. What do the fees include? Do the facilities offered justify the fees that you would pay? Is the infrastructure modern and in keeping with contemporary industry standards and requirements?

Faculty and Alumni

The teaching faculty is vital not only because they will be lecturing in class. A professor can also become a friend, philosopher and guide; in short, a mentor to a student. How learned the teaching faculty is, their experience, expertise are all important factors to consider. Find out if the faculty has taught in other institutions, has industry experience, experience teaching abroad or has published papers. Previous students and their career trajectories may also be significant factors: illustrious alumni are a good indication that a college turns out capable, well-rounded professionals.

Pedagogy & Curriculum

Some of the things to check are, how comprehensive and diverse is the curriculum? Does it keep pace with modern industry requirements? Does the college offer only degrees or does the curriculum work to create competent, employable professionals? Does the teaching methodology include only theory or also involves simulations, games, discussions, role plays, field visits etc.? Is there a rigorous evaluation system in place?

Placements

Several colleges offer placement guarantees but these could be hollow promises. They may fall short of promises made. If campus placements are in fact successful, which are the companies that come calling? What is the college's placement track record? This is more important than all the promises made beforehand. Check online, speak with current and past students to know more.

Research program/Publishing

This may not be important for a bachelor’s degrees as much as higher studies. Students looking to pursue further studies may want to closely examine a college’s research program and funding, the number of times university papers that have been published in respected journals, and so on.

Location & Hostel facilities

If a college is located conveniently close to one's home, that is a huge plus point. This however is not often possible, so hostel facilities are another important aspect to examine. If hostel facilities are inadequate or poor, is it possible to find affordable housing or paying guest facilities for the student? Is public transport adequate or would a vehicle be required?

Check reviews online

Don’t just speak to family, friends and fellow students. Check reviews online as well. Check the institution’s website and social media presence. Weigh all the pros and cons before making a choice that may have far-reaching impact on the future of a student and their likelihood of becoming a successful professional.
