Happiness Lessons We Can All Learn From This 75 Year Old Student

Humans of Bombay is a Facebook page dedicated to telling inspiring stories of supposedly ordinary people of the city. The page features “the lives of the wide range of people that makes Bombay the city it is.” It invites people to enter the lives of these inspiring people and feel connected. The story of a 75 year old retired electronic engineer is one such inspiring story. Here is his story and life lessons we can all learn from him and his wife.

A student at 75

This 75 year old is really enjoying his retired life. He and his wife are always on the move; traveling to visit family and so on. He also took up photography recently and now most recently, he and his wife have started to learn Arabic. At first mistaken for a professor, his wife and he are now the ‘happening couple’ of their batch of 50.

“We actually feel like college students”

The 75 year old shares his mantra for living a simple, sweet life – by keeping one's mind active, learning and stimulating the mind to keep it young. It is important to keep excited about life – it keeps one young and happy, he says. The post has since gone viral with over a thousand shares – probably because it states some simple lessons for a happy life.

Only you can make you happy

That 75 year old has a close knit family who is very much a part of his life. But he creates his own happiness by continuing to do new things and by learning and remaining curious and excited about life.

Learn new things to remain young

You know what they say what you don’t use you lose – this is very true when it comes to the human brain. Young is a state of mind. Besides, researchers have also foung that if one is willing to keep learning new things, it keeps the brain younger, more agile and happier.

You are in charge

It is important not to relinquish control of your life into the hands of others or to let circumstances rule your life. You can change the past, but you can decide what your future will be like. That 75 year old decided that age is just a number and he also decided that he would be the master of his destiny. So what if he was retired, he would still be active, able and eager to discover what his future can be.

Value your relationships

At 75, he and his wife are learning a new language. Clearly they are a devoted couple and enjoy spending time together and being with each other. A close relationship like this is a huge asset for a happy life. Value and nurture your relationships.

Be with those who make you smile

This senior couple spends time with other presumably younger students who also make them feel younger; who make them smile!

Love what you have

Making the best of what you have and not craving the unattainable is important. So what if their son lives abroad, there is much at home that they love and enjoy doing. Rather than longing for what they don’t have, they delight in what they do have.
