Did You Know Singles Awareness Day (S.A.D.) Is Right after Valentine’s Day?

I wonder if it is a mere coincidence or a deliberately wry reference to the fact that many singles find Valentine’s Day to be rather difficult – SAD or Singles Awareness Day falls on 15th February each year, precisely a day after the day appropriated by lovers to declare their feelings and affections publicly.

Too commercial?

A lot of single people and indeed a very great many couples can seek to get away from the commercialization associated with Valentine Day and its cloyingly obvious romantic trappings. There are those among us who gag at the idea of having anything to do with pink balloons and heart-shaped red pillows festooned with tinsel.

S.A.D.?

Singles Awareness Day is supposed to be a day for singles to get together and commiserate or celebrate, depending on the way you look at it. One can choose to be sad that they are single or they can choose to celebrate their independence and remind themselves that one doesn’t have to be in a relationship to be happy; a sort of thumbing of the nose at smug couples.

Being single and loving it

This is the day that one can revel in being alone. All those who deplore the marketing baggage of Valentine Day can embrace this status and celebrate freedom and individuality without the fuss and the bother of the accoutrements of romance.

Celebrating S.A.D.

So what can single people do on Singles Awareness Day? Well, you can send yourself flowers and gifts; after all, you're supposed to have a great relationship with your inner self! Or you can get together with other singles and like-minded souls and plan a party. After all, you survived the mawkish goings on of the previous day without throwing up so this is reason enough to celebrate!

More SAD celebrations

Other ways to celebrate SAD are to do and eat the things you like, take a trip and do some self-indulgent travelling. Do some volunteer work, if you want to do something that you feel is more worthwhile. Also as an antidote to the plethora of pinks and reds of the previous day, wear green – it is supposed to be opposite of red. SAD can be used to pamper oneself in other ways – that spa treatment that one was hankering after, now is the time to get it.

Sad? Don’t be!

Being in a relationship is a lot of drama! You have to think of the other person's feelings all the time, prioritise their likes and needs and make time for them. You really need to ask yourself whether you need the complication in your life!

Remember!

Relationships can be difficult and they need work. It may be a good idea to resolve not to settle for just about anything or until such time as one is ready to settle down and also the right someone ambles along. Just because one sees couples all around is no reason to jump into a relationship that doesn’t feel ‘right’.

Be happy and not SAD

Maybe Valentine’s Day isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be! Maybe you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a lot of overpriced schmaltzy, tacky stuff that is supposed to declare your love. Maybe you just want to be happy. Maybe you just want to be – you!
