Thugs of Hindostan - What We Know So Far

Everything Aamir Khan does is fascinating for Indian audiences; if he is doing whatever it is with Amitabh Bachchan, the fascination intensifies. One of this year's most anticipated films Thugs of Hindostan features both these Bollywood heavyweights as well as Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Sheikh. Here is what we know so far about the film.

Releasing this Diwali

The film hits theatres this Diwali; 8 November 2018. The epic action film is based on a famous 1839 novel by Philip Meadows Taylor, Confessions of a Thug. The book was based on the legend of the “deceivers” or the “thugee cult”, as they were called, who robbed and murdered travellers during the times of British India. The movie is directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya and produced by Aditya Chopra, with music by Ajay-Atul.

Comparisons inevitable

Thugs of Hindostan will release much before the other big release of 2018; Zero starring Shah Rukh Khan and featuring Salman Khan. However, seeing that both films have huge stars as well as massive budgets, comparisons are probably inevitable.

Khudabaksh

Amitabh Bachchan plays the role of Khudabaksh, the commander of thugs. While the poster impressed fans, many mentioned the startling resemblance the poster bears to the Pirates of the Caribbean series of movies.

Suraiyya

Katrina Kaif plays a dancer of some sort it would seem. So far we know little about the plot of the film. We cannot make too many guesses based on what we know about the book; because the book appears to have no female protagonists. We can presume that the film will be a significant departure from the bestselling book from almost 200 years ago.

Zafira

This is another character in the film. Zafira the archer of the warrior princess is played by Fatima Sana Sheikh. The characters in the book do not have the same names as those in the film; it would appear that the characters have been renamed for added dramatic impact.

John Clive

We all learned of the heartless Robert Clive when we did history in school. The similarly named character of John Clive, played by Lloyd Owen and the tagline “face of cruelty” are perhaps meant to indicate that this may be the villain, or one of the villains of the piece.

Waiting

What everybody seems to be waiting for is to see Aamir Khan’s character and his look in the film. Since his motion poster is not yet released, people expect that he will reveal his look only in the teaser or the official trailer of the film when that releases.
