Story of the Record Breaking Egg, Kylie Jenner, Diljit Dosanjh & 19 Year Old Marketing Guru

I get why Instagram is so popular – it caters to people’s innate narcissism and is tailored to cater to people's tiny attention spans. Likes and follows bolster the sense of self. Instagram has made stars out of random people including Kylie Jenner and a world record out of the picture of an egg. Indian singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh also became a part of this; this is that story:

The queen of Instagram

Kylie Jenner is a reality TV star, entrepreneur and social media personality. At 21 her estimated net worth was estimated to be a staggering $900 million or so and she made it to the cover of Forbes. With 124 million followers, she is one of the most followed people on Instagram. A post such as this one will routinely fetch several million likes.

This picture had the most likes

This photo from February 2018 held the record for the most number of likes ever. Currently, it has upward of 18 million likes.

Then came the egg

Early in January 2019, there was this post from the  world_record_egg Instagram handle. The post had a one-point agenda: dethrone Kylie Jenner’s photo as the most liked on Instagram. This simple stock photo of an egg now has upward of 50 million likes; Jenner's record is well and truly broken.

Soon….

It was all over Twitter too. This post has well over 4 million likes. I know what you're thinking – people really don’t have anything better to do!

Like I said…

Literally, nothing better to do!

Meme time!

This most useful meme lends itself beautifully to this situation as well as a wide assortment of others.

The 'egg-cellent' response

Jenner had this response to the egg episode. She tried to ‘fry’ an egg on the pavement, without much success it would seem.

Food wastage!

Some of the folks on Twitter thought it was hilarious, some thought it was a terrible waste of food.

Revenge?

Perhaps Diljeet Dosanjh was having a fanboy moment or perhaps just a bit of fun. He asked @KylieJenner to become ‘tension free and proceeded to give this response to the #WorldRecordEgg.

The guy behind the egg

He is just 19 and the media is describing him as a marketing guru. He is supposed to be the brains behind the record breaking success of the egg. Apart from getting celebs and others to plug the photo, he managed to appeal to the emotions of people, which is what made a simple egg so wildly viral. It is because people love to root for the underdog that a simple poultry picture received more than enough likes to dethrone Instagram's ruling deity.
