Everything I’ve read, heard or seen about Dangal so far has made me smile, laugh, cry or cheer enthusiastically. The upcoming Aamir Khan movie (slated for release on 23rd December 2016) based on real life Indian female wrestlers continues to create a buzz for all the right reasons. Here is all that you need to know about Dangal’s new song releases, real life hero Geeta Phogat’s wedding and why Aamir is not the best thing in the movie.
Two adorable little girls are being turned into ‘pehelwans’ by their steam roller dad – the haanikarak (harmful) father. No tasty treats or TV, lots of running and training and finally the “kushti ka akhada” – humpe thodi daya karo! Enjoy this cheeky and very catchy song.
Earlier this month, the real inspiration for the movie, Geeta Phoghat tied the knot with Pawan Kumar, also a wrestler. Aamir Khan attended the wedding along with Sakshi Tanwar who plays his wife in the film. He said that the film itself is his wedding gift to Geeta.
The newlywed couple said training and practice would resume within a couple of days of their marriage. “Do din se choodiyan pehni thi toh practice nahi kar payi.” Said Geeta, but in view of the fact that competitions begin next month, the two cannot afford to take a break.
The movie is inspirational because it is based on real life heroes; it topples gender stereotypes and tells the story of the triumph of the human spirit. The movie, its story and its theme connects to us all at so many levels.
Aamir Khan is seen here with the real Mahavir Phogat, the character he plays in reel life… the man who was transformational for his own daughters and for Women's wrestling in India to a large extent.
He may be one of India’s biggest stars, but Aamir Khan is not even the best thing in this movie! The young actors who play Geeta and Babita – Fatima Sana Shaikh and Zaira Wasim simply melt us with their vulnerability, their pluck and determination!
The determined little girl taking on the male wrestlers and winning. The father madly cheering from the sidelines. The boys who are scared to fight the girls – it is all so heartwarming… it is all just so dhaakad! So powerful!
