2018 Releases You Should Definitely Watch Out For Early In the New Year

It is that time of year when we are either looking back at the year gone by in appreciation (or regret) at what has been; or we are looking forward in hope at what will be. While 2017 had some very watchable cinema – Baahubali, Badrinath ki Dulhaniya, Raees, Toilet Ek Prem Katha, Hindi Medium, Secret Superstar, Newton and many others, 2018 also promises to be a mixed bag of commercial masala films, some not so mainstream and some offbeat stuff as well. We look at some soon to be 2018 releases, with their trailers and plots.

Padmavati

After the strident protests delayed the film's release, it will probably now be released on 5th January – the story of legendary queen Padmavati, who was the object of affection of invader Allaudin Khiji. Starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, this is one from Sanjay Leela Bhansali that many are eagerly looking forward to.

Kaalakandi

We see Saif Ali Khan after a while in this dark comedy with an ensemble cast. Releasing on the 12th January 2018, this is a movie about a man who is diagnosed with stomach cancer, who then proceeds to get into all sorts of dangerous situations.

Padman

Based on a true story, this is the tale of an 'everyman' who turned out to be a superman because of his commitment to finding affordable sanitary napkins for women. Starring Akshay Kumar, Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor, Padman promises to tackle a taboo subject in a realistic and entertaining manner. This most awaited release of 2018 is expected to hit the theatres on the 26th of January.

Aiyaary

Also releasing on the 26th of January (Republic Day) is the Manoj Bajpayee and Sidharth Malhotra starrer, Aiyaary (meaning ultimate trickery). The movie seems to pivot on corruption in defence deals and on intelligence agencies.

Titu ke Sonu Ki Sweety

This rather complicated sounding flick seems promising because of the fresh young cast and the sign of some fun, identifiable cinema. The film is described as a war between bromance and romance; starring Kartik Aaryan, Nushrat Bharucha, Sunny Singh and Alok Nath in an uncharacteristically foulmouthed avatar. The movie releases on 9th February, just in time for Valentine's Day.

Hichki

Starring the redoubtable Rani Mukherjee, this is a movie based on a teacher with Tourette Syndrome who sets out to mentor a bunch of difficult underprivileged kids. Releasing on 23rd February, this should be very interesting to watch. Perhaps this is Bollywood's version of To Sir With Love or do I mean Dead Poets' Society?

Parmaanu The Story of Pokhran

This is what appears to be an action thriller, starring John Abraham and Diana Penty and Boman Irani. Earlier slated for a December release, the movie will now release on 23rd February and is one of the 2018 releases to watch out for.
