The Boy Who Chose a Wonder Woman Backpack – And Sent Out a Message

The Wonder Woman movie did a lot of things – it made superheroes uber cool, its success sent out a clear message that the world is ready for women-action-oriented films and it took gender out of the superhero equation to a considerable extent. Kids now embrace Wonder Woman as readily and devotedly as they do Superman and Spiderman and all the rest as this little boy’s choices seem to indicate:

Katie Alicea’s post

She wrote an article about her son choosing a Wonder Woman backpack; about how she was happy about her son breaking down gender stereotypes but also nervous about him starting kindergarten in a few days.

Gal Gadot tweeted this

She played Wonder Woman in the film so she was delighted when she came across the article about the boy, his mother and the backpack. She thought something like this is important for breaking stereotypes.

Support

Many were happy to see Gal Gadot’s post and the welcome veering away from stereotypes that the story represents. It’s about a child making choices based on what he loves; devoid of social expectations or disapproval, which is great feels this tweet.

A female idol

Qualities such as strength, heroism and bravery tend to be so closely associated with the male of our species that people struggle to find relatable women to look up to. Many find comfort in the fact that Diana of Themyscira (Wonder Woman's real name) is welcome phenomenon.

No less a man

This guy is clearly a big fan; that is a lot of Wonder Woman memorabilia/merchandise there! He believes that this doesn’t make him any less a man; good for him!

Another fan!

Who says boys can’t like wonder woman, says this fan… clearly a next level fan who went and got himself permanently inked!

Not a big deal!

It is quite common for little girls to wear Superman or Batman merchandise, so why is this any different, said one tweet.

Apparently it is, for some

There were of course, those who wanted to pour scorn over the incident; who felt that this would ‘confuse’ a little boy and make others bully him. Others thought that the parents of that little boy were setting their son up to be hurt; one thought that the boy would need therapy later in life!

Let kids have fun!

This tweet says what I feel: the backpack, crown, costumes… it’s all a bunch of kids having fun! And while they're having fun, most kids aren’t going to notice that a boy has a girl superhero bag or vice versa. If they do notice it, they’ll see that it doesn’t matter – soon it will stop mattering to anyone – and we will all have won! Except that crabby uncle who thought that the kid will need therapy ..... all because he had a Wonder Woman backpack!
