It’s Easter Sunday tomorrow and for those of you who have Christian friends, you’ll probably receive an Easter egg (made of chocolate). However, do you know the legend behind the celebration? Yes, it has to do with the resurrection of Jesus Christ, so obviously there are many myths circulating around it. So for the sake of clarity here are Easter myths debunked.

There is some confusion on what Jesus did first after he came back. Some say, Jesus Christ first appeared to Saint Peter, which is the widely accepted version. In many Gospels however, it is stated that Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene.

While you may have thought that Easter eggs and all those chocolates and candies were an initial part of Easter, that’s not the case. This myth originates from a German goddess named Ostara who, it’s said, changed her pet bird into a rabbit. It was this rabbit which brought brightly coloured eggs that the goddess gave to the children.

Goddess Ostara’s bunny or rabbit would leave candies inside the shoes of the children in their homes when they would be sleeping. Over the years, as the eggs and candies grew, children started making baskets to fit all of them.

Many relate Lent with sacrifice. Though it’s about sacrifice, but the sacrifice here is not just some materialistic offering, but can also be a bad habit that one would possess (such as laziness). This makes it a sacrifice truly worth making.

For many people, Christmas is the main festival and Easter the secondary one. But they both are an important part of Christianity; Christmas is the day Jesus Christ was born whereas Easter is the day Christ resurrected from the dead.
