Considering India is a country that thrives on stories of the fantastic kind, it has always been strange that the film industries don’t make more movies based in fantasy. Of course some of the mainstream Rajnikanth films are entirely based on the unreal, but they are not promoted as being in this genre. So a search on Wikipedia led to a startling result. There are at least 85 fairly famous fantasy films that have been made in India by the different film industries. Here are a list of some of the fantasy films that may be interesting to watch:

1. Ajooba

This is for all Amitabh Bachchan fans. This movie is really old. Made way back in 1991, it has extremely poor special effects. There are flying carpets, magic, dolphins, miracles and everything else you can think of. Also stars Rishi kapoor, Dimple and Sonam (not Kappor).

2. Chandramukhi

This film stars Sridevi and Salman Khan and was the first film in which Sridevi’s age was very apparent. The story was of a Princess of Angeldom who comes down to earth. Here she meets and falls in love with Salman Khan. There are the regular villains who want her for her power and the hero saves the day of course.

3. Hatim Tai

It is a real movie folks, not just something to be used for dumb-charades. This movie was made in 1956 and was later remade in 1990 and has witches who curse young maidens. Riddles that need to be solved before curses can be broken. Heroes who save the day and love triumphs in the end.

4. OMG – Oh My God

This one was fantastic. Man suing God for his plight. In insurance companies can get away with not paying due to acts of God then God should be liable to pay. God is forced to come to Earth to reason with him. What an interesting concept. Very good acting by both Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar.

6. Paheli

This was a mainstream movie that bombed at the box office but the concept was quite interesting. It speaks of spousal neglect, possession by a good spirit, and love that transcends all barriers. This movie stars Shahrukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee.

7. Puli

This one came after the success of Bahubali and was the story of a young man fighting against an evil queen. Starring Vijay, Shruti Hassan and Sridevi (as looks today), this was another film made with big budgets and has a larger than life plot.

9. Toofan

Another Amitabh Bhachchan movie and to be honest only a true Big B fan can enjoy this movie. There is Big B in a double role, there are identity mix-ups, corrption that needs fighting, murders that need avenging and a lot of wind blowing throughout the film.
